Heathrow Airport is expected to unveil its third runway plans within the next few months, according to CEO, John Holland-Kaye.
The proposed plans will include an additional runway located in the north-west of the airport along with new facilities.
However, Labour's shadow transport minister, Mike Kane, has questioned the need for such an expansion.
Kane stated at a conference on 31 January: "We probably have enough runway capacity as it is".
Furthermore, the plans have been backed by the UK government through the "Airports National Policy Statement".
However, Kane's comments reflect the Labour Party's position on the matter.
Back in 2018, they supported expansion at Heathrow but have now expressed concerns over local noise pollution and emissions levels.
On the other hand, Heathrow claims that expanding the airport will have economic benefits and they are committed to delivering a project that is sustainable and works within environmental guidelines.
The debate has raised issues of economic growth and climate change, which brings a complex challenge for decision-makers.
