Man jailed for 24 years for rape and murder of mother-of-two
Rhys Bennett, 23, has been sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 24 years for the rape and murder of Jill Barclay, 47, in Aberdeen on September 17, 2022. Bennett, who did not know Barclay before the attack, followed her as she made her way home after a night out, before launching an attack that the judge, Lord Arthurson, said "plainly involved extreme, sustained and frankly feral violence". After raping Barclay, Bennett poured petrol on her and set her alight. Bennett admitted the charges at the High Court in Edinburgh on Wednesday.
