Ukrainian forces have allegedly destroyed a bridge near the city of Bakhmut, sparking rumors that the army may be planning a retreat from the area.
Some believe that this retreat would benefit Russia and be a significant symbolic blow ahead of the first anniversary of the war.
Ukraine has denied any intention to leave the city, despite heavy fighting and decreasing supplies.
Meanwhile, the Kremlin looks set to capture Bakhmut and others areas before February 24th.
According to a local Donetsk region news site, Ukrainian forces recently destroyed a bridge near the eastern city of Bakhmut in what has been characterized by some as a potential retreat from the area.
If true, this could have significant symbolic implications ahead of the first anniversary of the war, as experts believe it would provide Russia with a boost.
Ukraine, however, vehemently denied any intention of leaving Bakhmut or any other areas.
"We will never retreat from Ukrainian territory," stated Ukrainian Foreign Minister, Pavlo Klimkin.
Reports suggest that the Kremlin is focusing its energy on capturing Bakhmut before February 24th, marking the one-year anniversary of Russia'sĀ invasion.
Furthermore, Ukraine and its Western allies have warned that Russia's new offensive across the contact line seeks to gain more territory before Western supplies arrive in the spring.
Despite the differing interpretations of events, it seems that the Ukrainian army is fighting against increasing adversity as they struggle to maintain control of the Bakhmut region.
