Mark Pomerantz, a retired federal prosecutor who helped convict mob boss John Gotti, joined the investigation of Donald Trump by the Manhattan district attorney in 2021.
His involvement in the investigation was controversial, with some questioning his motivations and others praising his expertise.
According to The Guardian, Pomerantz's time with the DA was "substantive but controversial.
" While he did not personally appear in court during the investigation, he was heavily involved behind the scenes in reviewing evidence and building the case.
The Guardian characterises Pomerantz as a well-credentialed former prosecutor who was "widely admired" in legal circles.
On the other hand, The Washington Post points out that Pomerantz's move from retirement to prosecution raised questions about whether he was motivated by a desire to take down the former president.
The Hill notes that Pomerantz's involvement was seen by some as a sign that the investigation was heating up.
In February 2021, Pomerantz reportedly interviewed Michael Cohen, Trump's former lawyer, as part of the investigation.
The Wall Street Journal reports that Pomerantz also played a key role in the DA's efforts to obtain Trump's tax returns, which were eventually turned over to prosecutors by the former president's accounting firm.
Ultimately, the Manhattan district attorney charged the Trump Organization and its CFO with tax fraud and other crimes.
Trump himself was not personally charged in the investigation.
