MPs criticise government over handling of asylum seekers
The UK government has been criticised by MPs for its handling of asylum seekers, including moving them into hotels with poor conditions and without notifying local councils. The Manston migrant processing centre in Kent, which was holding over 4,000 migrants, has been emptied and the immigration minister has ordered the removals after warnings that it had become so overcrowded that migrants were being held unlawfully. The home secretary has faced legal challenges over the crisis at the centre. The government has been accused of failing to plan for the volume of people crossing the Channel and of a failure to properly engage with councils and MPs.
