Former President Donald Trump claimed on his social media platform that he expects to be arrested on Tuesday in Manhattan, and called on his supporters to protest his impending indictment.
Meanwhile, Tesla CEO Elon Musk predicted that Trump would win in a "landslide victory" should he be criminally charged.
Reports suggest that New York City prosecutors have been closing in on a potential indictment of Trump in recent weeks over payments made to adult film star Stormy Daniels ahead of the 2016 presidential election.
In further posts on Truth Social, Trump railed against a "corrupt & highly political Manhattan district attorney's office" which he claimed was increasingly guilty of "NOW ILLEGAL LEAKS," allowing "new records to be set in violent crime.
" While Trump insisted he had committed no crime, Musk's view was that "if this happens, Trump will be re-elected in a landslide victory."
The move by prosecutors follows a lengthy investigation into hush money paid to Daniels by Trump's former personal lawyer Michael Cohen.
Cohen, who is himself already serving a three-year prison sentence for charges linked to the Daniels payment, testified under oath that Trump directed him to arrange the payment, an allegation the former president has denied.
The prosecutor currently leading the case is Alvin Bragg, who was elected Manhattan DA during the 2021 election campaign, in which he was heavily financed by liberal billionaire George Soros.
