JK Rowling, author of the Harry Potter series, spoke on a recent podcast, The Witch Trials of JK Rowling, about her tweets in 2019 in support of Maya Forstater, who lost her job after tweeting that transgender women could not change their biological sex.
Rowling acknowledged that she knew the response would make some Harry Potter fans "deeply unhappy".
However, despite backlash for her views, she believes she is "absolutely upholding the positions that I took in Potter."
Phelps-Roper, the host of the podcast series, suggested that some of Rowling's views on transgender issues contradicted the messages in the Harry Potter series.
However, Rowling disagrees, and said she is trying to protect women's rights.
She said, "I have a voice...I feel I have to use it.
At enormous personal cost, sometimes."
Rowling's tweet in support of Forstater sparked controversy in 2019, leading to the creation of the #IStandWithMaya hashtag by those defending Forstater's right to express her beliefs.
Forstater went on to win her case against her former employer, who fired her over her tweets.
Rowling's controversial stance has led to accusations of transphobia, but she denies this and says she is concerned about safeguarding women's rights.
