Football presenter Gary Lineker re-shared a message sent to his son on Twitter, calling for his son to be "burned at the stake" following Lineker's row with the BBC.
The message was sent from an account with only one follower.
Lineker questioned Twitter owner Elon Musk and the acceptability of such abuse on the platform.
Gary Lineker, host of Match of the Day, received abuse online following his brief suspension as host of MOTD at the weekend.
He shared a message sent to his son, which called for him to be "burned at the stake," due to his support for his father.
Both Lineker and other BBC staff members have been receiving online abuse, while Lineker reinstated as the host of MOTD on Monday.
Lineker expressed his displeasure with Musk, calling on him to investigate the acceptability of such messages on his platform.
Meanwhile, the BBC's director-general and chief content officer held "lunchtime sessions" for staff to discuss recent events.
While the abuse was only from a single account, it highlights the continuing issue of violent language and online hate, calling into question the role social media companies have in regulating this behaviour.
