What's happened
Ukrainian forces have made breakthroughs in pushing back Russian troops and reclaiming territory in southern and northeastern Ukraine.
Why it matters
The gains made by Ukraine in their counteroffensive are significant as they are pushing back against Russian aggression and reclaiming territory. The successful drone attacks also disrupt the Russian war machine and target key Russian military installations.
What the papers say
The Ukrainian military spokesperson reported the successful counteroffensive and drone attacks, while the Russian Foreign Minister accused Western powers of fighting against Moscow through their support for Ukraine. NATO's Secretary-General warned that the war in Ukraine will be long-lasting.
How we got here
Ukraine launched a counteroffensive in June to push back Russian troops and reclaim territory. They have been gradually making progress, with recent breakthroughs in the southeast and near the city of Bakhmut. The counteroffensive aims to break Russia's land bridge in southern Ukraine and cut off their forces in Crimea.
