Former US President Donald Trump claimed on his Truth Social platform that he expects to be arrested on Tuesday over an alleged hush money payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election.
Trump called on his supporters to protest against such a move.
While Trump's lawyer confirmed that this claim was based on media reports that he could be indicted next week, a spokesperson for Trump denied any prior notification of arrest.
Prosecutors in New York have been investigating the payment and allegations of whether it constituted a violation of campaign finance laws.
Trump's recent post on Truth Social caused Republican allies to rally to his defence, with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy announcing a congressional investigation into prosecutors reportedly preparing for Trump's indictment.
The Telegraph stated Trump called the Manhattan District Attorney's Office "corrupt" while The Independent pointed out that this would make Trump the first US President to be indicted.
Meanwhile, Al Jazeera highlighted that Trump had referred to himself as "the far & away leading Republican candidate & former President of the United States of America" while The France 24 underlined the payment in question centred on $130,000 paid to Stormy Daniels.
