How we got here
Peshawar has been ravaged relentlessly by deadly terrorist violence over decades. The resurgence of the Pakistani Taliban has been met with fresh concern and the group is perceived to have been emboldened after the Afghan Taliban's takeover of Afghanistan in 2021. The attack comes two months after the Pakistani Taliban abandoned a ceasefire. The attack has raised questions about the government's ability to fight a new wave of militancy amid a seemingly intractable economic and political crisis.
