What's happened
Shelling near the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine has caused a blackout and compromised the safety of the site.
Why it matters
The Zaporizhzhia plant is Europe's largest nuclear power facility and the situation could have a serious impact on the availability of essential staff on site to continue to safely and securely operate the nuclear power plant. The operator of the Zaporizhzhia plant is considering shutting down the only remaining operating reactor, as it no longer has confidence in the restoration of offsite power.

How we got here
The plant's offsite power lines have already been cut and the shelling at Enerhodar has caused a lasting blackout there. The situation has been ongoing for the past three weeks, with the plant relying on the thermal plant in the surrounding area for power. The renewed shelling has now caused a complete blackout in Enerhodar and compromised the safe operation of the nearby Zaporizhzhia plant.
