The Irish Government has ordered a number of people from the Russian Embassy in Dublin to leave the country in response to Russia's recent decision to ban 52 Irish officials from entering Russia.
The Irish Minister for Foreign Affairs, Simon Coveney, has said that there will be discussions on whether to take further action in the coming week or so.
The two events are not necessarily connected to each other.
The Russian decision to ban the 52 individuals arrived days after a US report accused Russia of trying to interfere in American presidential elections, which enraged Moscow.
The Irish officials on Moscow's list were named for alleged 'Russophobic attitudes'.
As a response, Ireland has asked several Russian Embassy officials to leave the country.
Coveney said that this sanctions list was compiled by Moscow, and included both government ministers and opposition figures, many of whom are no longer in office.
Meanwhile, there are no plans to expel the Russian ambassador from Ireland.
There are about 25 people working in the Russian Embassy in Dublin, and experts have suggested that they may be at risk of expulsion should diplomatic relations worsen.
