What's happened
Steve Bannon surrendered to New York state prosecutors to face a criminal indictment on fraud charges related to the We Build The Wall fundraising initiative.
Why it matters
Bannon's indictment is significant as he was a close ally of former President Donald Trump and was involved in his successful election campaign in 2016. The charges also suggest that the actions of some top Trump allies can still generate legal headaches long after Trump left the White House and also despite being issued pardons.
What the papers say
The sources all report on the same event, with some providing additional background information on Bannon's previous legal troubles and the charges against him.
How we got here
Bannon was previously charged with fraud in August 2020 following a federal investigation into the We Build the Wall fundraising initiative, intended to generate the capital needed to pay for the president's signature US-Mexico border wall to block illegal immigration. Bannon was accused of swindling Trump's supporters out of $1m, having claimed he would not take compensation for his part in organising the venture. Bannon was also convicted of contempt of Congress for failing to cooperate with the January 6 congressional panel.
