Oleksandr Matsievskiy, a Ukrainian soldier captured and shot by Russian-speaking forces was posthumously honoured with the Hero of Ukraine award.
Matsievskiy was filmed defiantly chanting "Glory to Ukraine" before being shot down, causing widespread anger as well as allegations of war crimes.
The footage led to an investigation and a search for the identity of a man hailed as a national hero and symbol of resistance.
The sources differ in their characterisations of Matsievskiy's death, with some claiming that it was a war crime committed by Russian soldiers, with others simply stating that he was shot down by Russian-speaking forces.
The BBC News reports that President Zelensky bestowed the honour on Matsievskiy, calling him a warrior who will be remembered forever.
The Independent further states that Matsievskiy was a prisoner of war who was shot down by Russian-speaking soldiers, whilst The Guardian adds that Ukraine's security services concluded that he was the soldier in the video that went viral, bringing an end to a dispute over his identity.
Finally, Reuters reports that Ukraine's military confirmed Matsievskiy's identity as a sniper, and that Zelensky bestowed the title of Hero of Ukraine on him in his nightly video address.
