Viola Davis-led film 'The Woman King' exceeds box office expectations
The Woman King, a film about the Agojie, an all-female warrior troop in Africa in the 1800s, has exceeded box office expectations, earning $19m in its opening weekend in North America. The film, directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood and starring Viola Davis, was released by Sony and TriStar in 3,765 locations and carries a reported production budget of $50m. The film received rapturous reviews after its debut at the Toronto Film Festival and has a 94% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
